When shopping around for a warm jacket, there are several features you should look out for besides its insulation:

• Hood: you can lose a lot of heat through your head unless your jacket has a well-insulated hood. A hooded down jacket will protect both your head and neck from rain, wind and snow. With an adjustable hood, you can cinch it down over your face for added protection from the elements.
• Pockets: while most coats have pockets, you want them deep, insulated and well-positioned. Ideally, there should be at least two chest pockets, one inside pocket, and additional side pockets.
• Zippers: a good winter jacket should have a quality zipper closure to seal the cold. Many come with double zippers that let you unzip from the bottom for better leg movement and increased warmth.
