What are the benefits of a flexible hiking boot?
When you think of hiking boots, you may picture them as rigid, heavy and even restrictive. But not every hiking boot is built the same. A flexible hiking boot offers greater comfort and adaptability, allowing for more natural foot and ankle movement. They are typically made from softer materials, enabling the boot to bend and move in tune with your foot's natural motion. These hiking boots are ideal when you don't need as much robust protection for your toes and feet but still want a comfortable ride. Their trainer-like weight and flexibility make them perfect for moderate terrain, easy mountain trails, or getting from A to B.
At Columbia Sportswear®, we offer a wide range of durable footwear for all terrains. Our flexible and lightweight walking shoes provide exceptional comfort as you go from the city to the trails. You’ll also find a superb selection of hiking clothes for women, men, and kids so the whole family can join the adventure.
Can hiking boots be lightweight and flexible?
While you may imagine a hiking boot to be heavy, they can certainly be light and flexible, too. It all typically depends on the material used in their construction. Naturally, stiff leather hiking boots will be much heavier and more rigid than hiking sandals for men or a low hiking shoe with 100% cotton uppers. However, both provide excellent comfort and protection thanks to our cushioning and waterproof technologies.
Many of our hiking shoes feature robust traction technologies to keep you sure-footed on slippery surfaces or rocky or uneven terrain. With a tread pattern designed to enhance performance, our Adapt Trax™ outsoles provide exceptional grip in wet conditions. Meanwhile, our Omni-Grip™ core traction technology provides all-terrain grip and stability with every step.
But while both are excellent for hiking, low and flexible men's and women's hiking boots are often best for non-technical hikes and terrains. On trails where you may encounter sharp rocks and uneven ground, you may prefer a hiking boot with a stronger outsole that provides better protection for your feet.
Why choose flexible hiking boots?
Not every hike and trail needs heavy leather hiking boots. Lightweight all-terrain shoes or boots can be just as effective even on demanding terrain, especially during the warmer weather. Just some of the benefits of choosing light, comfortable hiking shoes include:
-
Saves valuable energy: When you wear lighter mountain hiking shoes or boots, you'll carry much less weight on your feet and, therefore, use less energy as you walk. More weight on your feet can actually use up more of your energy than carrying a heavy backpack. When hiking for a longer distance, this can make a massive difference. Using less energy each time you lift your feet to walk will mean you have more energy left in the tank to hike for longer.
-
More comfortable: The softer fabrics of this type of boot are much more breathable. This means your feet won't get hot and clammy even in a hot climate. Sweaty feet can often lead to blisters. But light hiking shoes allow air to circulate so your feet can breathe. And if you're worried that softer materials mean less support and protection, there's no need. With more flexible soles, you can enjoy extra cushioning. We'd also recommend you don a thin pair of hiking socks with your flexible mountain shoes for extra comfort and security while you hike.
-
Less breaking in time: Flexible and lightweight men's and women's hiking shoes require considerably less breaking in than your traditional stiff, heavy boots. As a result, they are more comfortable and are less likely to make your feet feel sore or cause blisters (the nemesis of every hiker). The lighter and softer materials will also allow the boot to fit your feet better, so you can pretty much wear them straight out of the box.
What socks do I need for hiking?
High-quality hiking socks made from drirelease® wool perfectly match a pair of flexible hiking boots. Look for hiking socks with Omni-Wick® high-performance wicking and mesh ventilation to keep your feet cool and comfortable. Ensure your hiking socks have good arch support and Y-heel construction to ensure a great fit.
